Blue Skies Farm was created from Erika's dream of bringing together two of her passions - learning about and working with her horses and helping people find connection, first with themselves, then with others.
From Erika's experience working with horses, she has become increasingly aware of the intense need for a horse to feel safe and their incredible ability to communicate with such subtlety and honesty. Body language is a huge component to understanding horses... and it translates well to understanding people.
Our mission is to empower families to connect and build strong bonds and trust with their children in a space that supports honest communication and feedback. Learning to set healthy boundaries and problem-solve issues together builds respect and anchors faith and trust in each other.
Horses are amazing beings! They give honest and immediate feedback as to what the person needs to do or not do as they work together. Trust and respect are needed for a horse to feel safe. When we offer that to them, they join us willingly in a beautiful dance.
Our horses at Blue Skies Farm are our partners in the arena. Working with them on the ground, eye to eye, gives them every opportunity to teach us what we need to learn. Our job is to watch, listen and hear what they are saying to us.
Being raised with her mom's horses from age 8, she learned a whole lot from a retired show horse and an opinionated half- Arabian mare. At 16, Erika was ready to purchase her own horse, Ruby Rose. Ruby Rose was a green broke, 3 year old chestnut, half-Arabian mare with lots of sass and a huge heart. She learned everything she could from local horse people, trainer's videos and clinics, some was good, some not so good. Through her own personal experiences with Ruby Rose, she knew that horses were smarter than we usually want to admit. Erika learned a whole lot about how our thoughts and attitudes cause the horse to respond in pretty specific ways. Horses respond to ALL environmental stimuli, especially us.
In 2019, Erika became an Equine Assisted Learning Facilitator through Equine Connection: The Academy of Equine Assisted Learning in Alberta, Canada. She has found that the programs from Equine Connection are a beautiful, engaging and insightful tool to help people help themselves as they work with a horse to learn more about who they are and what they want or don't want in life. Horses are very powerful, honest teachers.
When we gain a better understanding of what the horse is saying and why, we find definite parallels to our relationships with family and people in general.
Today, Erika continues to study and learn all she can about how to have a better connection with a horse so that the horse actually CHOOSES AND WANTS to be our partner.
Overall, life is about choices and each of us deciding what is best for me, myself and I.
Be brave and choose something!
